As such, some physicians choose not to administer naloxone drug users in overdose situations as it could mean that they would have to treat patients who may die on their hands in order to ensure that naloxone is administered to their overdose patients. We hypothesize that administering naloxone to these patients will prevent their deaths. Methods Design, Setting, and Participants We included adults who received methadone maintenance treatment and were determined to be opioid users (defined as having used prescription pain medicine for at least 90 days and/or having used illicit opioids for at least 90 days). The sample consisted of 834 patients who received methadone maintenance treatment, 39 patients who received methadone but had not treatment for opioid use disorder, 10 patients who were opioid users receiving methadone but not maintenance treatment, and 29 patients who weren't opioid users but were not receiving methadone maintenance treatment (Figures 1, 2).
