A CENTURY OF DIRTY WEBSITES: COMPUTER SECURITY FIRM PUTS OUT A "DIRTIEST" LISTSource: mxlogicPosted on December 7, 2009 A list released on November 30, 2009 by security researcher Symantec details the websites which serve the most malware on the internet. The 100 dirtiest sites on the web contain anywhere from 3,500 to more than 86,000 individual computer security threats apiece. Adult-oriented websites feature prominently on the list, accounting for 37 of the 100 entries. Many of the adult sites are named similarly to well-known legitimate pornographic sites, in the hopes of snaring victims who mistype the site address. Other popular types of malicious site included numerous versions of the standard fake anti-virus scam, and one site that attempted to capitalize on the popularity of a Macintosh rumors website, using the same mistyped URL scheme as for the adult sites, according to PC Pro. Symantec has not directly published the list - hoping to forestall foolish visits to malicious sites - but several media outlets have revealed its contents, which show that the U.S. hosts the dirtiest sites, ahead of China, Germany, Canada and Great Britain. Security researchers emphasize the extreme importance of ensuring that PCs are protected by up-to-date virus software and system patches.
