DOES YOUR COMPANY'S PASSWORD POLICY HURT SECURITY?Source: Informatica Information SecurityPosted on October 11, 2005 According to a password practices study commissioned by RSA Security on 1700 U.S. businesses, a whopping 28% of users are required to remember more than 13 passwords while another 30% need to use between 6 and 12 to do their work. User frustration is compounded by policies that enforce password complexity and frequent expiry. This situation is obviously driving users up the wall because 25% feel compelled to keep a spreadsheet to manage their passwords while 22% keep track of them using their PDAs. Another 15% simply write them down, sometimes on Post-It notes. A separate study has found that every time that a user forgets a password, the reset procedure takes around 16 minutes to complete and costs companies between $25 to $50 in support costs. Instead of cleaning up security policies companies are now reallocating IT budgets to password resets and other activities they mistakenly attribute to user error and employee ignorance.
