U.S. HOUSE PANEL: INTERNET SECURITY SUFFERS SERIOUS PROBLEMSSource: WKYTPosted on November 20, 2002 The report card is in -- and the federal government is getting a failing grade in computer security. A House panel today said the government is doing a poor job protecting some of its most important computer systems. Online security is especially bad at the departments of State, Justice and Transportation. Congressional investigators found pervasive weaknesses at the 24 largest departments and agencies. The best marks -- a B-minus -- went to the Social Security Administration and the Agency for International Development. Among the worst government-wide problems were weak protections against sabotage or information theft by insiders. Other shortcomings: a lack of protection against hackers and persistent problems with plans to function during an emergency. There was some good news. Security was slightly better overall than in past years.
