20 QUESTIONS DIRECTORS SHOULD ASK ABOUT PRIVACYSource: Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and E-CommerceALERT.comPosted on March 23, 2002 Copyright © 2001 by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. Used with permission.Privacy is a significant concern to Canadian consumers. Numerous polls and surveys have identified fears about privacy as one of the major inhibitors to the growth of electronic commerce in Canada, and around the world. Canadian legislation now establishes new rules to recognize the privacy rights of individuals with respect to the collection, use, disclosure and retention of their personal information. The rules also recognize the obligations of organizations to protect personal information in a manner that a "reasonable" person would consider appropriate under the circumstances. As part of its Research Studies program, the Information Technology Advisory Committee (ITAC) of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) is sponsoring the brochure "20 Questions Directors Should Ask About Privacy" to guide an organization's Board of Directors in evaluating personal information privacy issues that might arise in discharging its responsibilities. The brochure might also be of interest to members of other governance bodies, such as audit committees and information technology steering committees. The brochure "20 Questions Directors Should Ask About Privacy" is available for download from the CICA web site (in PDF format), or directly from Bennett Gold's WebTrust site (in PDF format). The CICA information page titled "Protecting the Privacy Rights of All Canadians" is available here.
