ONTARIO PROPOSES BROAD PRIVACY LEGISLATION FOR THE PRIVATE SECTORSource: PrivaTechPosted on February 4, 2002 The Ontario (Canada) Ministry of Consumer and Business Services has announced that it plans to enact a tough new law to prevent businesses, non-profit organizations, and health care institutions from violating the personal privacy of Ontarians. The Ministry plans to table the legislation in the spring of this year. The law could take effect as early as next year. The legislation is intended to improve upon the federal private sector privacy law currently in place by having specific protections in place for health information, defining key terms such as "implied consent", and being less administratively burdensome on small businesses. The Ontario legislation will also regulate the health ministry in certain respects and will give the Ontario Privacy Commissioner broad investigation powers.
