SURVEY DETAILS RUSSIAN SECURITY PROBLEMBut financial losses and disruptions greater in U.S.Source: Security Wire DigestPosted on October 11, 2001 The results of a recent Ernst & Young survey on computer security in Russia produced some rather unremarkable statistics, since most categories closely mirrored those of security problems in the western nations. But, survey analysts say the numbers aren't representative of the larger computer security problem in the former communist country. The survey found that 65 percent of Russian companies suffered a security breach in the past year, compared to 70 percent in the U.S., and 39 percent reported hacker intrusions, nearly twice as many as Western European companies. However, while 42 percent of U.S. companies reported financial losses due to hackers compromising data, only 3 percent of Russian companies reported similar problems. Ernst & Young's Moscow office attributes the discrepancy to the poor security practices of Russian companies and the country's inadequate cybercrime infrastructure. Oftentimes, Russian companies don't know hackers are manipulating their data, analysts say. The upside from the survey is only 26 percent of the Russian companies reported vital systems failure due to a security breach, compared to 70 percent of Western European companies.
