FIRMS TO SPY ON STAFF'S INTERNET USESource: News.com.auPosted on August 30, 2001 A computer package has been developed to allow businesses to monitor workers' Internet usage as it happens, in "real time". Software distributor Janteknology managing director Glenn Miller said yesterday non-official use of the Internet was costing businesses billions of dollars a year across the world and firms were seeking solutions. Mr Miller said one legal firm using monitoring software had discovered half of its staff were visiting the Big Brother television program website at lunch time, which almost crashed the firm's Internet system. Mr Miller said his company had recently received a trial version of a program called WebSpy Live, which allowed businesses to monitor Internet use in "real time" rather than previous days or weeks. An ACNielsen survey this year found the average amount of time spent on non-business browsing per week per employee (with Internet access) was 6.8 hours.
