STUDENT FINANCE GLITCH - THOUSANDS OF PERSONAL RECORDS EXPOSEDSource: News Channel 6 WJBFPosted on August 25, 2001 A state investigation has been ordered after college students discovered their Social Security numbers, home addresses and other personal information on the Internet. The information was inadvertently exposed from a database kept by the Georgia Student Finance Commission. Student journalists found more than 3100 pages of personal information on thousands of students attending Georgia schools. Yesterday, Governor Barnes called for a state investigation into how the agency accidentally disabled its "firewalls" -- barriers that prevent unauthorized access to a computer network. The problem has since been fixed.
