COMPUTER SECURITY RISK FROM "LIFESTYLE" PASSWORDSSource: AnanovaPosted on July 2, 2001 Millions of office workers are too obvious when it comes to choosing their computer password. According to a new survey, 47% choose their own name or nickname, while 32% go for their beloved football team or favourite celebrities. It means it is often very easy for an acquaintance to gain unauthorized access to confidential business information. According to domain name registry CentralNic, many people regard choosing a suitable password as a personality test rather than a serious security matter. "So many people tend to subconsciously believe their password has to sum up the essence of their being," said company chairman Stephen Dyer. "This makes it very simple indeed for anyone to access their computer or secure Internet sites." Analysts point out most security breaches come from users' unwitting personal interaction with password thieves. Another major threat comes from specialist hacking software widely available on the net. These programs can crack passwords by automatically running entire dictionaries through a log-in procedure.
