NEW VULNERABILITY DATABASE LAUNCHEDSource: Security Wire DigestPosted on April 16, 2001 Joining the ranks of Mitre, SANS and CERT, a new web site called SecurityTracker will list and categorize recent security vulnerabilities, provide exploit information and indicate available solutions. Officially launched today by Security Global Net, the site aims to provide IT administrators and managers with a continually updated vulnerability database organized into easily searchable fields. "Our purpose is to report on security vulnerabilities in a rapid, timely fashion," says Stuart Moore, CEO of SecurityGlobal.net. "That's a major difference between us and some of the other databases. CERT is very selective and focuses only on the major vulnerabilities, and they aren't very timely -- they wait until the vendor has released all the possible fixes before they release information." The new database once again sparks the heated debate in the security community about the pros and cons of full disclosure prior to an available fix. Moore says, "We're a full-disclosure list--we simply report on what's been found in both obscure and public sources. I don't think our reporting of already public information changes the situation at all." SecurityGlobal.net will soon be offering a similar fee-based service. "We are planning a subscription-based service that will be more rapid than our current Web site, which delays the releases by a couple of days, but the paid subscribers will get the information right away--within minutes."
