CONCEALING DATA BREACHES LIKE THE SONY PLAYSTATION HACK PUNISHABLE BY JAIL UNDER PROPOSED US BILLSource: The TelegraphPosted on June 13, 2011 The US Personal Data Privacy and Security Act, introduced by Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, is intended to "establish a national standard" for the protection of personal information stored online by companies. Sen Leahy has tried to introduce versions of the bill four times in the past. In a statement on his website, Sen Leahy said: "The many recent and troubling data breaches in the private sector and in our government are clear evidence that developing a comprehensive national strategy to protect data privacy and security is one of the most challenging and important issues facing our country. "The Personal Data Privacy and Security Act will help meet that challenge, by better protecting Americans from the growing threats of data breaches and identity theft." If it passes into law, the bill will impose criminal penalties - including jail sentences of up to five years - on individuals who "intentionally or wilfully" conceal breaches of personal data, and will require companies that store personal data to implement internal protection policies. "Protecting privacy rights is of critical importance to all of us," said Leahy. "I hope that all Senators will support this measure to better protect Americans' privacy." In recent weeks, several companies - including the technology andgaming giant Sony - have been the victims of major security breaches. In April it was revealed that hackers stole the personal data of more than 70 million users of Sony's PlayStation Network, including bank details and passwords.
